Main Job Purpose

This appointment at Bristol Veterinary School’s Langford Campus offers the opportunity to be a key

player in the delivery of excellence in teaching and clinical activity in the veterinary curriculum. The

role-holder will contribute to, and lead aspects of, the teaching of veterinary pathology throughout

the curriculum. There will be opportunities to support wider aspects of the clinical and professional

curriculum, and opportunities for educational research.

The school has been through a significant change in recent years with ongoing revision of the BVSc

curriculum, development of new facilities, recruitment of several new staff, development of new

clinical services and a new research strategy.

The successful applicant will work within Bristol Veterinary School and with the Veterinary Pathology

Team, delivering teaching and supporting learning. The post involves the delivery of clinical, didactic

and practical teaching to undergraduate veterinary students; and teaching and, potentially, the

supervision of postgraduate students. A proportion of the role will involve the provision of high-quality

post-mortem service. The candidate will have experience of working and teaching in an academic

and/or practice environment, and will demonstrate experience of, and a commitment to, training the

next generation of veterinary surgeons. Some research experience is beneficial but not essential.

The successful candidate will join a school committed to delivering teaching excellence and

scholarship across all areas and will work with the wider teaching team to ensure the highest quality

of student educational experience possible.

Main Responsibilities

Teaching Responsibilities

• Didactic teaching and, where appropriate, providing leadership in teaching programmes for

veterinary and veterinary nursing undergraduates (includes lectures, development of online

resources, tutorials, practical classes, project supervision, facilitation of case based learning

sessions etc.). Teaching hours will be determined in consultation with the Head of School

• Participating in the preparation and marking of course assessments and end of year

examinations

• Small group teaching (including practical and clinical skills) and assessment of veterinary and

veterinary nursing undergraduates on clinical rotations

• Participating in student support programmes, particularly as a tutor.

Clinical Responsibilities

• Shared responsibility for the delivery of a Veterinary Pathology service within the School

• The percentage of time spent undertaking work on the service will be agreed with the Head

of School and subject to review; initially this is expected to be 40-50%.

• Overall line management is with a Section Lead

Leadership and Administration Responsibilities

Engage effectively with the University’s CREATE scheme (or equivalent Teaching and

Learning for Health Professionals programme), achieving the PGCAP (and/or HEA Fellowship)

within 2 years of appointment.

The post holder will administer teaching activities, working closely with our student

administration team to ensure all aspects of teaching, assessment and student experience are

working effectively.

The post holder will actively be engaged in student recruitment including open days and visit

days.

The post holder will make a full contribution to the corporate life of the School and University.

Research Responsibilities and Opportunities

• Appointees are expected to contribute to the research and development initiatives of the

school and may be involved with both clinical and educational research in collaboration with

colleagues across the School and wider university as appropriate.
